BIG BONE LICK STATE PARK’S OUTDOOR MUSEUM/DISCOVERY TRAIL - Union

Re-created grasslands, wetlands and wooded savannas lie along the trail leading to a "bog" diorama. Shown going into or struggling inside the marsh bog are a woolly mammoth, a mastodon, a giant sloth, bison, various skeletal remains, and scavengers feeding on the carcasses. Visitors approach the diorama on a boardwalk that rises above the floor of the marsh, enabling them to "look history in the eye." The outdoor museum continues for a mile past the entrance to the Discovery trail. The final portion of the loop, the Bison Trace, brings a live buffalo herd into view. Year-round.

BLUE LICKS BATTLEFIELD MUSEUM - Mt. Olivet

Throughout history, the salt springs at Blue Licks State Resort Park have attracted prehistoric animals, Indians and pioneers such as the legendary Daniel Boone. Learn more about the fascinating history of Blue Licks in the newly renovated Pioneer Museum. BUTLER-TURPIN STATE HISTORIC HOUSE - Carrollton

The fine country home, built in 1859 in the Greek Revival style, is a place of remembrance to one of Kentucky’s foremost military families from Colonial times through the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War and the Civil War. The living house museum embodies life at the confluence of the Kentucky and Ohio Rivers along with the military contributions of the Butler family. Commanding view of the Kentucky River Valley. Open from March 1 to November 1.

COLUMBUS-BELMONT STATE PARK - Columbus

Columbus-Belmont State Park is a 156-acre site that played a fascinating role in the War Between the States. The 1861 Battle of Belmont, a raid fought to test the strength of this Confederate stronghold, marked the opening of the Union's Western Campaign. It was also Union General Ulysses S. Grant's first active engagement in the Civil War. Open daily May through September and weekends in April and October.

DINOSAUR WORLD - Cave City

Dinosaur World is an outdoor dinosaur museum with over 100 life size dinosaurs in an outdoor museum setting. In addition to the Dinosaur Walk, there are many interactive exhibits. Search for authentic fossils to take home in the “Fossil Dig”. FORT BOONESBOROUGH STATE PARK - Richmond

When Daniel Boone and his men reached the Kentucky River on April 1, 1775, they quickly moved to establish Kentucky's second settlement--the site still known as Fort Boonesborough. Reconstructed as a working fort complete with cabins, blockhouses and furnishings, resident artisans perform craft demonstrations and give modern-day visitors a true sense of what life was like for pioneers in Kentucky. T he Kentucky River Museum, a newer addition to Fort Boonesborough State Park, provides visitors with insight into the lives of families who lived on the river and worked the locks and dams in the 1900s. John James Audubon State Park houses the world's largest collection of Audubon artifacts and offers exhibits on the artist's life. The museum interprets Audubon’s life through his art and personal memorabilia, framed within a timeline of world events. LEVI JACKSON WILDERNESS ROAD STATE PARK - London

The Mountain Life Museum brings visitors into a pioneer settlement of seven buildings that were moved from other sites or built as replicas on the park and are filled with pioneer relics including tools, products of agriculture and household implements. In 1786, the McNitt Party became the victims of a bloody Indian massacre in which at least 24 people were killed. Open April 1 through October 31.

LINCOLN HOMESTEAD STATE PARK - Springfield

Lincoln Homestead State Park features the original and distinctive frontier home of Lincoln’s mother, with fine examples of pioneer furniture, as well as replicas of the 1782 cabin and blacksmith shop where his father was reared and learned his trade. You'll also find the home of Mordecai Lincoln, the favorite uncle of the President, along with split-rail fences and pioneer furniture that portray the rugged pioneer life. Open May 1 - October 31.

THE LINCOLN MUSEUM - Hodgenville

The Lincoln Museum's main exhibit includes twelve dioramas (life-size wax figures set in three dimensional displays) showing pivotal times in Abraham Lincoln's life—from his boyhood in Kentucky to his assassination. Other exhibits include rare newspaper clippings, campaign posters and Lincoln memorabilia. An art gallery on the second floor features original paintings, drawings and other artwork portraying Lincoln. Designated Kentucky's official Lincoln Museum in 1991. OLD FORT HARROD STATE PARK - Harrodsburg

Old Fort Harrod State Park In 1774, James Harrod established the first permanent settlement west of the Alleghenies in what would become Central Kentucky. Preserving Kentucky's pioneer history, the fort has been reconstructed near the site of the original. Heavy timbers form stockade walls and enclose the cabins and blockhouses. Interpreters in period-correct clothing perform pioneer tasks such as woodworking, weaving, broom making, and blacksmithing and tend the farm animals and gardens. The Lincoln Marriage Temple shelters the original log cabin where Abraham Lincoln's parents were married in 1806, and the Mansion Museum houses Civil War artifacts, a gun display, Native American artifacts and a collection of Lincoln memorabilia. Open 9am - 5pm April 1 to October 31. By appointment November to March.

OLD MULKEY MEETING HOUSE - Tompkinsville

The Old Mulkey Church, originally called the Mill Creek Baptist Church, was established by a small band of pioneer Baptists from North and South Carolina and led by Philip Mulkey. In April 1804 the growing congregation commissioned the building of a meetinghouse. Today the meeting house and grounds can be visited free of charge. Many Revolutionary War soldiers and pioneers, including Daniel Boone’s sister, Hannah, are also buried here.

PERRYVILLE BATTLEFIELD STATE HISTORIC SITE Perryville

The Civil War comes to life in the Perryville Battlefield Museum. The park museum tells of the battle that was the South's last serious attempt to gain possession of Kentucky. WAVELAND STATE HISTORIC SITE - Lexington

Waveland, a beautiful Greek Revival home built in 1847 by Joseph Bryan, a grandnephew of Daniel Boone, exemplifies plantation life in Kentucky in the 19th-century; from the acres of grain and hemp waving in the breeze (hence the Waveland name), to the raising and racing of blooded trotting horses. The outbuildings—the slave quarters, smokehouse, and icehouse—are important reminders of the social and economic climate of the time. Museum open April 1 to Dec. 23, 2009.

WHITE HALL STATE HISTORIC SITE - Richmond

The restored Italianate mansion was home to Cassius Marcellus Clay, emancipationist, newspaper publisher, Minister to Russia and friend to Abraham Lincoln. Built in 1798, it was originally a two-story Georgian brick structure called Clermont. The addition of White Hall doubled its size and added indoor plumbing and central heating. Today you can tour White Hall and feel the aura it possessed in the 1860s, complete with period furnishings and pieces original to the Clay estate.

WICKLIFFE MOUNDS STATE HISTORIC SITE - Wickliffe

Wickliffe Mounds is the archaeological site of a prehistoric Native American village of the Mississippian mound builders. Located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi river, the village was occupied from about AD 1100 to 1350. Today, the Wickliffe Mounds museum exhibits the excavated features of the mounds, outstanding displays of Mississippian pottery, stone tools, bone and shell implements and the architecture of Mississippian mounds and houses.

WILLIAM WHITLEY STATE HISTORIC SITE - Stanford

The William Whitley House, also known as Sportsman's Hill, stands today as a monument to pioneer ingenuity and resourcefulness. It was the first brick home and circular racetrack built west of the Alleghany Mountains, completed in 1794 by William Whitley and his wife Esther.
